I, too, sing America. BY LANGSTON HUGHES

Poem :

I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow,
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me,
“Eat in the kitchen,”
Then.

Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed—

Theme :

The theme of the poem is a protest against the discrimination that the american society made between the black and the white people .

Summrey :

The speaker claims that he, too, sings America. He is the “darker brother” who is sent to eat in the kitchen when there are guests visiting. However, he does laugh and he eats well and grows bigger and stronger. Tomorrow, he will sit at the table when the guests come, and no one will dare to tell him to eat in the kitchen. They will see his beauty and be ashamed, for, as he claims, “I, too, am America.”

Hughes utilizes free verse here. The poem is very brief, containing only five stanzas  .
In total, there are only eighteen lines to the work. The simplicity of the poem, however, does not detract from the powerful message of the work.  Instead, it emphasizes it even more.

Historically, African-Americans have been oppressed in America. In this era many African-Americans lived in poverty and were beaten and abused.

They faced discrimination in nearly every aspect of their lives. They were forced to live, work, eat and travel separately from their white counterparts, had few civil or legal rights, were often victims of racial violence. They were treat as animal .
Because of this, the feeling of freedom was limited in the black community.

The speaker in the poem tells us that he,too sings american .He is black american ,working as a servant in white house  .When visitor come to his master's house he is sent to kitchen to have his meal there .

He eats well and grows stronger .He hopes that some day he will sit at the table with the white guests .Nobody will dare tell him to go to kitchen.Rather they will see that he has grown beautiful ,and they will be ashamed of their pas behavior of not having recognized him as equal with them.

The speaker 'i ' in this poem is not the poet himself or any other individual .He  represents all black american of his time.Through a simple description of the state of a black slave in a white  house the poet has symbolically placed his protest against discrimination between the black and white .

The speaker begins by declaring that he too can “sing America,” meaning that he is claiming his right to feel patriotic towards America, even though he is the “darker” brother who cannot sit at the table and must eat in the kitchen.

He proclaims that "tomorrow" he will join the others at the table and no one will dare send him back to the kitchen. Not only that, but the "others" will see “how beautiful” the speaker is and will therefore feel ashamed. This statement is extremely hopeful and optimistic. The speaker demonstrates a heightened sense of self and proclaims his ambition to assert his legitimacy as a an American citizen and as a man.

"I too an america " this sentence is more powerful and most forceful. He identify himself with american .He also the brother of white people .The world kitchen ,table, company etc are all simple everyday worlds .But are charged with extraordinary power of communication .
The images of the servant the kitchen the table company are effective like the language .
The poem is important as it has historical movement and talk about the right of Black people we were deprived from all social facilities.

I, too, am America.
